Some people believed that rabbits are silent, quiet and calm animals, but they make lots of noises depending on the different situations they are in.

Like humans, animals have their own way of communicating with fellow animals and their pet owners, but not all of us understand what they are trying to impart because some animals, like rabbits, produce strange and unusual noises.

Like dogs and other domesticated pets, rabbits are also highly sociable and expressive creatures because they like to make noises and sounds to express their hunger, thirst, happiness, pain, agitation and fear.

As pet owner, you should be observant on the behavior of your pet rabbits because you are not sure what they are trying to tell you. If you fail to decipher their messages, you may be risking their lives and health especially when they are trying to ask help from you because they are in extreme pain and very ill.

These strange sounds and noises could mean lots of things, like happiness, sadness, anger, agitation and extreme pain.
To look after your pet’s welfare and health, you should take note of their difference and remember what they are trying to communicate to you.

Rabbit noises include:

  • Soft grinding of their teeth – Rabbits grind their teeth when they feel happy and good. This sound is similar to cat’s purring.
  • Loud grinding of teeth – If you hear this sound from your pet rabbit, you should bring him immediately to the veterinarian because it connotes that he is in extreme pain and not feeling well.
  • Grunting or growling – This type of sounds means lots of things. Some rabbits growl when they are stressed and afraid of something, while others grunt when they are not happy and upset. Moreover, some rabbits even grunt during mating.
  • Muttering – Rabbits mutter when they are unhappy and annoyed. It is comparable to individuals who murmur on something when they feel annoyed.
  • Wheezing – They make wheezing sounds when rabbits are excited. It usually occur when they explore on new things and play hard.
  • Squeaking – They produce this sound when they ingest their cecotropes.
  • Buzzing – This sound is often confused with grunting, but it is different because it has low-pitched scratching sound. Rabbits buzz while mating with another rabbit.
  • Snoring – Rabbits snore when they are relaxed and sleepy.
  • Thumping – They thump their front or hind feet when they are angry or feel threatened. Bucks also thump their feet to impress on doe and to show her how macho he is before mating.
  • Screaming – Rabbits scream when frightened on something. Most often, they scream when someone grabs them. When predator gets hold them, they scream very shrill and very loud. They also scream when they are in extreme pain, very sick and need immediate medical attention from your veterinarian.
